Saasification and Cloud Migration for vitagroup: a key player in the highly-regulated German Healthcare sector

Key Challenges

Vitagroup faced the challenge of aligning business and technical objectives for cloud adoption in a highly regulated industry. Overcoming complex security, compliance, and integration requirements, particularly with regulations like C5 and KRITIS, was critical to ensuring a smooth transition. Additionally, implementing the AWS Landing Zone and ensuring a seamless transition to SaaS required meticulous planning and collaboration.

Key Results

Vitagroup successfully migrated to AWS, establishing a scalable, secure, and resilient infrastructure. Key achievements include transitioning to a SaaS model, onboarding to AWS Marketplace, and becoming an official AWS ISV Software Partner. Their Health Intelligence Platform (HIP) now delivers enhanced security, scalability, and cost transparency, with significant milestones like passing the AWS Foundational Technical Review (FTR) and launching their first product on the Marketplace.

Overview

About vitagroup HIP - Health Intelligence Platform

vitagroup HIP - Health Intelligence is a German Independent Software Vendor (ISV) offering an open health data platform, HIP (Health Intelligence Platform), that provides a facility to store patient data independently from operational Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. The HIP supports long-term storage, secondary use of data for research and quality control, and the creation of comprehensive data pools.

Key customers of vitagroup include large hospitals, hospital groups, and health regions. In this context, vitagroup is a valued partner in the digital networking of healthcare, offering open structures, innovative technologies, and forward-thinking solutions.

Challenges

vitagroup has successfully offered its software solutions to the market for more than 20 years, achieving solid business results. Now, with the technological landscape evolving more and more towards Software-as-a-Services (SaaS) solutions and cloud-based workloads, vitagroup wanted to explore how to fully benefit from the AWS cloud to reduce technical complexity and increase overall flexibility.

More specifically, vitagroup was looking at the following high-level goals:

  • Improve the overall security, scalability, resilience, and cost transparency of their scaling infrastructure.
  • Accelerate the time to market for both established and new solutions, including joining the AWS Partner Network, onboarding to the AWS Marketplace, and validating their solutions through the AWS Foundational Technical Review (FTR).
  • Have a centralized infrastructure for single SaaS and On-Premises installations.
  • Bringing together the different facets, the ultimate goal was to fully implement a solution hosted on AWS enabling the team to manage the SaaS-related practices and deliveries directly from the platform.

To perform the necessary tasks and achieve its objectives, vitagroup can count on a strong technical team that handles all the internal operations. At the same time, vitagroup wanted to make sure to develop a proper cloud adoption strategy that could align business and technical considerations in the different areas of the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework: business, people, governance, platform, security, and operations - integrating different stakeholders' perspectives.

For these reasons, vitagroup chose to work with Ankercloud, a trusted AWS Advanced partner, to expedite the whole process while ensuring that none of the mentioned points was missed.

    Solution

    Assessment

A successful cloud adoption typically starts with developing a proper strategy during an Assessment phase, designed to discover and understand different facets of AWS and the company’s alignment with successful cloud management practices, along with the available tools for migrating.

After establishing a close collaboration, Ankercloud (as a Migration and SaaS certified partner) guided vitagroup through the Assessment steps:

  • AWS Migration Readiness Assessment (MRA), to evaluate strengths and gaps to be filled in the current internal structure with reference to cloud guidelines.
  • Workshops and discussions related to business planning, technical solution development, cost of ownership, timelines, networking, infrastructure, DevOps, and related aspects.
  • Tasks prioritization and cloud strategy alignment.
  • SaaS-specific best practices evaluation for user onboarding, user management, tenant isolation, automation, and solution delivery.
  • Security and compliance considerations (C5, KRITIS…).
  • AWS Landing Zone and Cloud Migration

Following the roadmap developed during the Assessment phase, the technical workloads for AWS account setup and resource deployment could start. The first step was to implement an AWS Landing Zone as a centralized tool to manage and orchestrate a multi-account environment, with full control over costs, settings and access management for different teams - including the planning of multiple Organizational Units, control policies, resource tagging, and other technical aspects. Moreover, the Landing Zone is compliant with fundamental regulations like C5 and KRITIS.

After the Landing Zone implementation, Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) was used to deploy resources on AWS for a templatized and repeatable approach to technical operations. The solution is mainly based on EC2 computing, S3 for file storage, Databases, networking and security components.

AWS Partner Network, FTR and Marketplace Onboarding

An extremely important aspect of the AWS cloud adoption process was to strengthen vitagroup’s partnership with AWS, joining the Partner Network and preparing for AWS Co-Sell activities. Indeed, after the completion of the registration process, vitagroup and Ankercloud focused on:

  • Get the team to familiarize with the AWS Partner Portal (APN) and useful tools.
  • Officialize vitagroup’s HIP solution with the AWS Partner Network.
  • Review the deployed environment with a Well-Architected Framework Review.
  • Certify the HIP with the Foundational Technical Review (FTR) process.
  • Onboard vitagroup as a seller on the AWS Marketplace.
  • Identify target offer types and publish the first product on the AWS Marketplace.
  • Ankercloud helped vitagroup navigate the AWS guidelines and process while evaluating the changes to be implemented from the technical side for streamlined integration.

    Business Outcome

As a result of the close collaboration with Ankercloud and AWS, vitagroup was able to:

  • Plan for the infrastructure deployment on AWS, understanding the critical aspects.
  • Have an overall cloud adoption strategy in place, giving execution a clear structure.
  • Discover how to host applications and large databases on AWS securely.
  • Migrate from their on-premises setup to AWS.
  • Establish SaaS-specific best practices and ground rules for creating a secure and automated infrastructure on AWS.
  • Integrate third-party tools and establish communication links.
  • Benchmark and perform proofs of concept (POC) for their solutions.
  • While some of these tasks are still under execution and will take some more time to be completed and optimized, vitagroup has already achieved important milestones:

  • AWS Business and Technical Integration: Vitagroup now has a solid AWS foundation, providing a modern, flexible, and scalable environment suitable for managing multi-tenant storage, fully integrated with CI/CD pipelines, and aligned with business and management objectives.

  • WAFR and FTR: HIP has passed in-depth technical validations in line with AWS industry best practices.
  • With their solution now hosted on AWS and robust controls already in place, vitagroup has firmly positioned itself as a leading innovator in healthcare technology. By embracing the scalability, reliability, and security of the Cloud, they demonstrate a forward-thinking approach to solving complex challenges in the industry.

Vitagroup’s strategic adoption of AWS indeed secures their capability to quickly adapt to the evolving needs of healthcare providers and patients, positioning them as a trusted partner for sustainable, tech-driven progress in the sector. Moreover, a fully scalable Cloud-based product lays a robust foundation for long-term growth and development, strategically orienting vitagroup to future success in the fast-changing and highly regulated HealthTech sector.
